Should blog post visitors be recorded in your visitor's list?

Should blog post visitors be recorded in your visitor's list?

A few months ago, we added a stealth setting that allowed users to browse blogs privately if they chose to. We removed this feature soon after due to the overwhelming majority of bloggers voicing their disapproval of private browsing within the community.

I recently learned that views to a blog post (through a link to a specific post, for example) are NOT recorded in the visitor's list. Only members who directly visit another member's main blog page are recorded in the visitor's list posted beneath the calendar.

This poll is to determine whether this community feels that all blog post views should be recorded under the visitor's list, or only when someone clicks through to your main blog page.

Q: Should all visitors to your blog, whether through your main page or a link to a post shared elsewhere, appear under the 'Recent Visitors' list?
Yes, every view should be recorded as a visitor.
No, only views through the main blog page should be recorded.
I don't care either way.

I can't think of any valid reason why someone needs to know I visited their blog unless I choose to interact with them. I like to browse blogs and most of them I have no interest in returning to. I think (actually I know) that popping up on a list of blog readers can send the wrong idea to some folks.

Personally as a blogger I have no issues with showing up on another members visitor list and I like seeing who has visited mine. I really don't see the big deal about who shows up and who doesn't.

Feel free to come and check out my blog outtherelinda

What with the trending list and different bloggers getting random exposure, there will be more people clicking on blogs they normally don't visit. My opinion is that seeing new visitors would encourage these bloggers to stay active in the community so the list won't be stagnant with the same bloggers desperately posting one post after another just to see themselves on every list conceivable.

I always love to see who has read my blogs and I do check out their profiles and their blogs as well. I also know that people, myself included, have had stalkers that go around watching what we do and then causing troubles for us. On a third note, I do know as with the 'whose viewed me' list there are people that see you viewed them or their blog and do misconstrue it as someone interested in them. There are pros and cons on both sides of this. My vote though is to leave it on. I most definitely agree with JN63JPN that the extra visitors showing up can help keep new bloggers interested and participating when they actually can see how people are coming to read their blogs.

Don't see why the site should mess with this, i say leave it as it is, a view should only be recorded visiting the main blog page.

Yes, it's nice to see who's visited one's blog and one can stumble across a single posting or the main page; shouldn't make any difference which way.....one was still a visitor.

As for the those who have problems with the pettiness, drama or what-not who are opposed to being seen in the visitor list....well, they can easily set their own blog to be viewed by just their 'friends' and stay within their own safe little circles. No reason that the rest on FREE Threesome Dating Site 4 Couple Looking for Third - FYS should be 'penalized' for moving about the site.

The reason someone is or isn't viewing isn't a reason to ASSUME anything!

Otis here

Just so you know I voted Yes because at the heading of my blog it clearly states not a word of the blog is true . I would hate to have someone come in the backdoor like a cockroach looking for a meal and a place to bed for the night and get to reading and thinking what I said was the gospel truth .

I do like to know who reads my blog. I in turn will often read theres, some I would never have known about, especially since it seems that a small minority are the ones featured in trending or most viewed categories. I will also read the blogs or check profiles of others that viewed the blogs that interested me figuring their viewers and I may have something in common. HOWEVER, I understand, just as some choose to discreetly view profiles they may also want to do the same with blogs and should have the same option. As it is, I always found it strange that if someone's profile was turn off they still appear in the list of who's viewed a blog.

I wholeheartedly agree with this comment.

In addition, it is sometimes annoying to have visited a blog once, and then receive an email from the blogger asking what led you to their blog, and what you think of it. In situations where I briefly browsed a blog, I may not even remember visiting it, and I have no desire to answer lengthy emails about what I did and didn't like about a specific blog. Not appearing on a visitors list would eliminate this.

In my opinion, blog reading should be anonymous if you choose it to be. At the very least, only watchers should appear on a visitors list. Watching a blog at least indicates some level of dedication to reading additional blog posts. It is hard enough to keep up with the email responses expected from people whose profile my mouse drifted over (insinuating to them that I actually viewed their profile, and have an interest in them) let alone the added emails from people asking for detailed answers to questions about their blogs. If one feels they simply cannot blog without knowing who reads it and how many times they visit, there are two options: 1)don't blog, and 2)make your blog "friends only"

Many people enjoy strolling through blogs - I know I do - and they look just to look because they are curious. I don't think that makes people nefarious, or trouble makers, or lurkers. It only makes them intellectually curious.

Some people will never "register" into a blog and I don't believe it really matters. I'm really only interested in the folks who register, make comments, and join in the conversation.

Let people look as much as they want and be as discreet as they wish.

I think that it should only be counted as a view if you actually visit the blog page. When I first started to read blogs I didn't comment.....all I did was read but I visited the blog and was called a stalker by a couple of bloggers and attacked by them. I still read a lot of posts but visit from the recent post page. I now see that every view is recorded....whether I have chosen to visit their main blog page or not and whether I have left a comment or not. This is going to stop me reading anything not on my watched list as I have no intention of being labelled a stalker ever again on this site.

There are types of blogs I like and others that I don't....and if I choose not to interact with a blogger I would prefer the fact that I read their post and didn't find that it interested me to be my business and mine alone.

I forgot to ask.....why does the site feel the need for a poll when the change has already been made?

I don't really care one way or another if I appear on my visitor list. I don't see a valid reason why we need to know we have visited our blog. Might be a programming issue (all or nothing). I have no problems showing on any visitor list. That will cut down on the stalkers and lurkers on this site. Sometimes I will comment and sometimes I will not comment depending what the topic is.

Keep the 'stealth' choice settings available for everything!

When I tried to get filters implimented so we could narrow down those contacting us to what WE wanted more of i.e. no married/married, out of state/in state, etc., I was all but yelled at that the site is trying to get people to *interact* more with each other. My preference of saying I didn't want a married man and being able to set my emails to not accept messages from anyone married suddenly became not fair to the married guy!! MY wishes were not as important as his wish to contact me. I still don't get that but.....

The reason I posted that is this... I am seeing quite a few people giving wonderful reasons for wanting to see who viewed their blogs that are part of 'interacting' with each other. I have seen how I am not the only one that reads the blogs and profiles of those that have viewed mine, how it can actually help a person with confidence to continue to post as they see there are people reading it, and even though I totally understand it can be annoying that it does generate some messages possibly asking what drew you to their blog. YES, I totally do not like those that think reading a profile/blog suddenly means that you want sex or to meet as it doesn't mean that, but there ARE some good things to this to get people to 'interact' with each other, which is what the SITE supposedly wants us to do.

Trust me, as I have had my own stalker in the blogs and they DID cause damage and were posting things twisting words and all and blocking them didn't stop them from coming back with another name, I know full well the stealth thing can and does cause troubles.

I personally don't care if anyone sees if I read their blogs.

    Quoting community:
I posted this poll because the change you guys see in your blog post viewers is due to a glitch, as is users themselves appearing as visitor's of their own blogs. After the debate about stealth mode, which members overwhelmingly rejected, it seems unfair to keep a back door method available for people who want to browse privately. Users rejected stealth mode due to privacy concerns. I don't see how this is somehow different. If someone is reading any of your blog posts, it seems very reasonable to me to include them as a visitor of your blog.
Thank you Aryana!!!

Thanks Aryana for the explanation.

If this is a glitch can you confirm that it has been allocated a bug number and that steps are being taken to correct it?

With all due respect to you and your team, people who do not blog on the site and regularly interact with others are not likely to understand how some of us....particularly those who have been involved in drama through no fault of their own....feel about this.

When I noticed the behavior had changed I wanted to post this poll to see how the users who are listening feel about a back door method to browse privately. Before I suggest fixing the glitch, I wanted to gauge if people felt it made sense to NOT allow stealth mode to be made available, yet be okay with someone viewing their blogs privately some other way. The results of this poll are almost exactly even-- so I don't feel it's okay to allow private browsing.

Either people should approve of allowing others to view blogs in stealth or they shouldn't. It seems counter intuitive to not record views after the backlash against our previous implementation of stealth mode.

I'll post a bug number for users appearing in their own visitor's list.
Thanks for your speedy rply and for posting a bug number.

Sorry Aryana, coming in late to this discussion.

I reckon I agree with you, there's no reason why your presence on each and every visit shouldn't be recorded, irrespective of how you get there. Though sadly, people who want to spy will simply set up new profiles and visit blogs relatively anonymously. But there's no obvious way around that, unless you start identifying shared individual IP addresses as being shared?

Incidentally, if every visit to a blog is now being recorded on the visitor log, why would my view numbers on some posts be increasing while the visitor list remains unchanged? Or did I miss something? Did you change it back already?

I see no difference in someone reading just one of a blogger's posts, by linking directly to it from a list; and coming to that blog via the main page.

Whether you are viewing an individual post, or visitng the blog and scrolling through the posts - YOU ARE STILL VISITING THAT BLOG, and should be listed as a visitor.

I do not like the stealth mode, as it can lead to stalking. There are too many bloggers (and members) who have been stalked, leading to very uncomfortable situations.

The safety and security of your members should be UPPERMOST, when considering changes to this site.
